On Paul’s second missionary journey he took two co-workers, Silas and Timothy, to the city of Thessalonica. They had stayed just a few weeks, building a small community of believers there, before they were run out of town. The letters of 1 and 2 Thessalonians tell us a great deal about these new Christians who had become known for their faith, love, and hope – demonstrated by action. In fact Paul called them a “model” for believers in Greece and beyond. Yet, they needed encouragement and reinforcement in some areas of their lives. These two letters give us a glimpse not only into the lives of model believers but also into the masterful approach of a model pastor/mentor – Paul himself.
